Role of Orientation of Graphite Fabric in Polyetherimide Composite with Respect to Loading Direction on the Wear Performance in Various Wear Modes

Abstract

The focus of the research was on investigating the influence of orientation of fibers in graphite fabric-reinforced polyetherimide composite on wear performance in selected wear modes viz. adhesive, abrasive and erosive. The graphite fabric-reinforced polyetherimide (PEI) composite was developed with a fixed amount of fabric (46 vol%). Tribo-evaluation in adhesive wear mode indicated that the fibers in the direction perpendicular to the sliding plane had excessively high coefficient of friction while, fabric parallel to the sliding plane proved to be the best orientation for very low wear rate. However, in abrasive and erosive wear modes, fiber orientation showed exactly opposite trends. Fibers in perpendicular direction proved most beneficial for low wear followed by the fibers parallel to the sliding direction. SEM techniques were used to investigate the wear mechanisms.
