Abstract

This chapter delves into the complex Acehnese conflict, which spanned three decades and was marked by historical grievances, economic disparities, and political turmoil. The conflict resulted in thousands of deaths and displacements, with failed peace talks initially leading to a reliance on military action. However, the Helsinki Peace Accord of 2005 marked a turning point, offering a highly efficient approach that benefited all parties involved. The chapter emphasizes the significance of positive peacebuilding, as advocated by Johan Galtung, which aims to address the root causes of violence rather than just the symptoms. Galtung's concepts of direct, structural, and cultural violence are explored, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to conflict resolution. The chapter also examines the role of language and cultural identity in peacebuilding, using the Acehnese conflict as a case study. It discusses the implementation of positive peace through root cause identification and the importance of fostering trust and understanding between conflicting parties. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the necessity of addressing root causes to prevent the recurrence of conflicts and the ongoing efforts to establish and maintain positive peace in Aceh.
