Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical assessment of run-off-road (ROR) vehicle collision risks for highway bridges in Ontario. It highlights the importance of evaluating both the probability of collisions and the structural condition of bridges, as well as their criticality within the broader transportation network. The study introduces a multiscale risk assessment framework that combines these factors to prioritize bridges for rehabilitation. A case study of a highway network in Ontario demonstrates the application of this framework, revealing that while the overall collision risk is medium-to-low, certain bridges are identified as critical due to their high network centrality. The findings provide valuable insights for stakeholders to focus on bridges that, if compromised, could lead to severe disruptions. This comprehensive approach ensures that bridge maintenance strategies are both effective and efficient, ultimately enhancing the safety and reliability of Ontario's highway infrastructure.
