Abstract

The deterioration of surface water quality due to pollution and climate change poses significant threats to water resources globally. This chapter investigates the use of satellite-based monitoring techniques to assess water quality in the Mukutmanipur Dam, a critical water body in West Bengal, India. By leveraging Sentinel-2 data and Google Earth Engine, the study analyzes spatio-temporal variations in key water quality parameters such as turbidity and chlorophyll-a concentration. The findings reveal significant seasonal fluctuations influenced by both natural factors and anthropogenic activities. Turbidity levels peak during the monsoon season due to increased sediment inflow, while chlorophyll concentrations vary with nutrient availability and light conditions. The chapter underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and the potential of remote sensing tools in managing water resources effectively. It provides a detailed methodology for using normalized difference indices to track water quality changes, offering a high-resolution, long-term perspective that enhances monitoring accuracy and supports strategic management approaches for natural resource conservation.
