Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate task of production scheduling in modern manufacturing systems, highlighting the challenges posed by increased product variation and constraints. It introduces a novel approach that combines rule-based heuristics with human expertise to optimize production leveling. The method is showcased through a real-world case study of a wooden door manufacturing company, where the proposed system successfully reduced the number of color changes and improved production efficiency. By presenting a step-by-step process that is both explainable and effective, the chapter offers valuable insights into how manufacturers can enhance their scheduling practices to meet the demands of flexible production environments.
