Abstract

This chapter presents a meticulous investigation into the seasonal variations and spatial distribution of heavy metals in aerosols and groundwater within an 8-kilometer radius of a coal-fired thermal power plant. The study highlights the significant role of both natural and anthropogenic sources in the dispersion of heavy metals, with a particular focus on the impact of the thermal power plant's emissions. The research employs advanced analytical techniques, including principal component analysis and thematic mapping, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental dynamics at play. Key findings reveal that heavy metals such as zinc, nickel, lead, copper, cobalt, and cadmium exhibit distinct seasonal and spatial patterns, influenced by factors like wind direction, precipitation, and industrial activities. The chapter also compares the heavy metal concentrations in the study area with other regions, underscoring the unique environmental challenges posed by coal-fired power plants. Thematic maps illustrate the distribution of heavy metals, while principal component analysis identifies the primary sources and factors contributing to their dispersion. This detailed examination offers valuable insights into the environmental impact of thermal power plants and the need for stringent pollution mitigation measures.
