Abstract

The article investigates how the sand tilefish Malacanthus plumieri acts as a secondary engineer in rhodolith beds, significantly influencing the habitats and biodiversity of benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. Rhodolith beds, formed by calcified nodules of non-geniculate coralline algal taxa, are crucial marine habitats that support rich and diverse communities. The tilefish contributes to the persistence and diversity of these habitats by moving, relocating, and rearranging rhodolith nodules, preventing their burial and promoting the colonization of various species. This process creates distinctive living spaces and interstitial environments, highlighting the ecological importance of mobile species in the engineering of marine ecosystems.
