Abstract

This chapter delves into the seismic response evaluation of precast concrete structures, comparing them with traditional monolithic frames. The study focuses on the performance of various beam-column connections, including emulative and non-emulative systems, under different earthquake scenarios such as far-field, near-fault with directivity, and fling step effects. Through extensive experimental and numerical analyses, the text highlights the differences in top story displacement, maximum inter-story drift ratio (MIDR), base shear, and maximum absolute acceleration between precast and monolithic frames. The findings reveal that while the backbone curves of the connections may not vary significantly, there can be notable differences in the overall frame responses, particularly in top story displacement and MIDR. The study concludes that precast frames with non-emulated connections can exhibit better performance compared to monolithic frames, emphasizing the need for further investigation into the vulnerability of precast frames under near-fault ground motions.
