Abstract

This chapter delves into the seismic safety analysis of small modular reactors (SMRs) using a hybrid Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Finite Element Method (FEM) approach. The study emphasizes the critical role of terrain effects and soil-structure interaction in ensuring the safety of nuclear power plants. By combining BEM for far-field topographical effects and FEM for near-field soil-structure interaction, the authors provide a comprehensive analysis of seismic responses. The research includes detailed parametric studies and validates the method through simulations of nuclear power plant structures in a valley with hilly terrain. Key findings highlight the differences in seismic responses due to terrain effects and the direction of the wavefield, underscoring the need for site-specific characterization and analysis. The chapter concludes with insights into the decision-making process for nuclear reactor construction sites, emphasizing the importance of topography, incident wavefield, and soil-structure interaction in nuclear power plant clusters.
