Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of seismic stability for road embankments constructed on soft soil foundations. It begins by highlighting the vulnerabilities of such foundations to liquefaction during earthquakes, which can lead to catastrophic damage. The study then focuses on the application of geotextile reinforcement as a stabilization technique. Using sophisticated simulation tools, the authors analyze the impact of geotextile layers on the horizontal and vertical stresses within the embankment. The results show a substantial increase in the factor of safety before and after seismic activity, indicating the effectiveness of geotextile reinforcement in preventing liquefaction and reducing deformation. The chapter also explores the distribution of stress states within the reinforced embankment, demonstrating how geotextiles help to control slip surfaces and enhance overall structural stability. The findings underscore the potential of geotextile reinforcement as a cost-effective and labor-efficient solution for improving the seismic resilience of road embankments on problematic soils.
