Abstract

This chapter delves into the selective recovery of gallium and indium from electronic waste through sulfidation and distillation processes. It highlights the critical role of these minerals in modern electronics and the challenges posed by their traditional extraction methods. The text explores the thermodynamic framework for sulfidation, emphasizing the selective conversion of gallium nitride (GaN) and indium tin oxide (ITO) into sulfides. It also discusses the subsequent distillation step, which effectively separates and concentrates these sulfides from their substrates. The chapter presents experimental results demonstrating the successful recovery of high-purity gallium and indium sulfides, showcasing the potential of this method for enhancing the supply of these critical minerals. Additionally, it proposes a semi-continuous process for large-scale implementation, offering a promising solution for sustainable e-waste management.
