Abstract

The escalating demand for urban water management solutions has spurred the development of a digitized and intelligent platform leveraging advanced sensor and communication technologies. Traditional battery-powered sensors, however, face significant limitations due to their short lifespan, leading to inefficiencies and resource wastage. This chapter addresses this challenge by introducing a water flow energy harvester (WFEH) designed for residential pipelines. The WFEH is engineered to capture water flow energy and convert it into electrical energy, ensuring a stable power supply for smart water meters. The device's design, comprising an impeller and magnets within a compact structure, is optimized through detailed simulations and experiments. Key parameters such as impeller shape, blade count, and guide vane height are meticulously analyzed to balance energy capture efficiency and pressure loss. Experimental results demonstrate the device's capability to achieve a peak power of 185 mW, highlighting its potential to extend the operating time of lithium batteries in practical applications. The integration of this self-powered solution into existing water management systems promises enhanced sustainability and operational efficiency.
