Abstract

The chapter delves into the Irish R.M. stories by Edith Somerville and Martin Ross, focusing on their use of detective fiction tropes. It argues that these stories can be seen as a form of detective fiction, with a recurrent structure involving crime, detection, and the revelation of social order precarity. The author emphasizes the role of horses in these stories, particularly in 'Trinket’s Colt', where a horse crime leads to a humorous and revealing investigation. The chapter also compares these stories to Arthur Conan Doyle’s 'The Adventure of Silver Blaze', highlighting similarities and differences in their narrative structures and themes. Additionally, it discusses the broader historical and cultural context of foxhunting and horse culture in Ireland, and how these elements shape the stories' narrative politics. The chapter concludes by suggesting that the Irish R.M. stories offer a unique perspective on the limits of imperial power and the complexities of colonial relationships, making them a valuable addition to the study of British imperial history and detective fiction.
