Continental Automotive has established a new unit for advanced electronics and semiconductor solutions. GlobalFoundries will be the strategic manufacturing partner.

Continental develops semiconductors to meet internal demand.

With its new Advanced Electronics & Semiconductor Solutions (AESS) organization, Continental Automotive (soon to be Aumovio) aims to develop and verify semiconductors for the automotive industry. The primary goal is to meet internal demand. GlobalFoundries (GF) has been selected as the strategic manufacturing partner. "To ensure future success of the group sector, we have decided to develop semiconductors internally. The creation of this fabless semiconductor organization will strengthen Continental’s position not only by reducing geopolitical risks but also by the way of becoming more self-reliant in this field", said Philipp von Hirschheydt, member of the Continental Executive Board and CEO of the future Aumovio.

The AESS organization will become part of the Operations and Technology central function. The fabless model envisages that the semiconductors will be developed and verified internally by AESS, while the production line will be set up at GF. There, the semiconductors will be manufactured exclusively for Continental Automotive. GF is a leading manufacturer of essential semiconductors and has a global manufacturing presence in the US, Europe, and Asia.

"Together, we want to bring advanced semiconductor solutions to market to meet the growing demand for software-defined vehicles", said Niels Anderskouv, President and Chief Operating Officer of GF. The new semiconductor organization will strengthen Aumovio's market presence and independence.
