Abstract

This study delves into the energy consumption of four Python libraries—Hashlib, Cryptography, CryptoHash, and PyNaCl—while implementing the SHA256 hashing algorithm. The research aims to identify the most energy-efficient library for secure data transfer and integrity. Through experiments conducted using the Intel Power Gadget, the study measures the power consumption of each library and analyzes the data using statistical methods like ANOVA and t-tests. The findings reveal that the PyNaCl library consumes the least amount of power and execution time, making it the most energy-efficient option. Additionally, the study calculates the carbon emissions associated with each library, emphasizing the environmental impact of energy consumption in data security. The research concludes by recommending the PyNaCl library for energy-efficient SHA256 implementation and suggests further studies to explore more energy-efficient approaches in algorithm implementation.
