Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical question of how democracies should respond to internal threats from anti-democratic groups. It explores three primary strategies: prohibition, inclusion, and social integration. The prohibition approach, often termed 'militant democracy,' advocates for early intervention to curb anti-democratic movements through legal measures like party bans and restrictions on freedom of speech. However, this approach risks undermining democratic principles and empowering future authoritarian regimes. The inclusion strategy emphasizes engaging with anti-democratic groups within political arenas to expose and refute their ideologies. While this method upholds democratic values, it risks normalizing and legitimizing extremist views. The social integration model focuses on addressing economic inequalities and social polarization to weaken the appeal of anti-democratic movements. This long-term solution requires patience and political compromise, which can be challenging in the face of immediate threats. The chapter concludes that a nuanced, multi-faceted approach may be necessary to defend democracy effectively while addressing its inherent criticisms and global challenges.
