Abstract

The article delves into the fabrication of SiC-reinforced AISI 434L stainless steel thin-wall structures using TIG-based Powder Bed Fusion Arc Additive Manufacturing (TIG PBF-AAM) method. It explores the advantages of SiC-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) in enhancing mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. The study focuses on the challenges faced with traditional methods like powder metallurgy and spray forming, and the potential of TIG PBF-AAM in overcoming these issues. The authors present a detailed experimental setup and procedure, including the fabrication of thin-wall structures with varying SiC content. The results highlight the microstructural variations, mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion behavior, and residual stress analysis of the fabricated parts. The article concludes by emphasizing the potential of TIG PBF-AAM for high-deposition-rate fabrication of ceramic-reinforced metal matrix composites, suitable for structural and tribological applications.
