Abstract

This chapter explores the design of utility poles under the impact of downbursts and tornadoes, focusing on the nonlinear geometric behavior of slender structures. The study introduces simplified load cases for downbursts and tornadoes, providing practical charts and guidelines for designing poles. It evaluates the equivalent uniform velocity profiles for 73 poles of practical dimensions, ensuring that maximum stresses and peak deflections are equal to or exceed those resulting from non-uniform high-intensity wind profiles. The research concludes that the proposed method can lead to a more economical design of poles under high-intensity wind loads compared to existing guidelines. The chapter also discusses the application of a downburst span reduction factor and the calculation of transverse forces acting on wires. The findings highlight the importance of considering the pole's height above groundline in determining the equivalent uniform velocity profile factor.
