Abstract

This chapter introduces a simplified model for evaluating the sustainability of road construction projects, addressing the limitations of traditional methods like Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA). The model focuses on key sustainability factors, including economic, environmental, and social impacts, and provides a practical approach to optimizing road design and construction. The model was tested on a hypothetical project and implemented on a real gravel road project in Blainville, Quebec, Canada. The results demonstrated significant reductions in cost, CO2 emissions, and other sustainability factors when using reinforced designs, particularly those incorporating cellular confinement systems (CCS). The model's validity was confirmed through a detailed post-construction calculation, showing only a 4% variance in cost and a 10% variance in CO2 emissions. This simplified model offers a practical tool for professionals to assess and enhance the sustainability of road construction projects efficiently.
