The aim of the present paper was the simulation of the mechanical behaviour of the human lumbar intervertebral disc under various types of static and time varying loads. The study is carried out with the aid of the finite element method. The model is built using the commercially distributed finite element program ANSYS 9.0, a powerful software package with great capabilities for simulating nonlinear materials and performing various types of analysis.
