About this book

This book focuses on the fundamental ideas in the future smart transportation infrastructure systems that, in turn, give rise to new architectures and applications of emerging technologies. Although the scope of transportation infrastructure systems is very broad, this book focuses in detail on the main one—urban road infrastructure systems. Based on the investigation of the development trend and current situation of the smart road infrastructure (SRI), this book clarifies the connotation, architecture, and implementation path of the SRI. Emerging technologies related to SRI have also been summarized, which is useful for SRI design and construction. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the SRI technology or intelligent transportation systems and road/transportation design engineers working on relevant projects.

The Rise of the SRI

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Background
Abstract
Over recent decades, the world has witnessed large-scale and rapid advancements in various sectors, including transportation, municipal services, water management, energy, mining, national defense, and residential infrastructure development. As a crucial element of the essential components of daily life—encompassed by clothing, food, shelter, and transportation—the development of transportation infrastructure has been evolving swiftly in response to the exponential increase in transportation demand.
Xingyi Zhu
Chapter 2. Road Infrastructure
Abstract
Transportation infrastructure encompasses the facilities that provide services for the conveyance of social products and the mobility of residents. Based on the composition of the national transportation system, transportation infrastructure can be classified into five distinct categories to facilitate the secure and efficient functioning of various transportation facilities: (a) railway infrastructure; (b) roads; (c) waterways; (d) aviation; (e) pipelines. Within the context of urban transportation infrastructure, roads occupy a predominant role.

Chapter 3. The State of the Art in SRI
Abstract
In recent years, the advent of new technologies such as smart connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and cooperative vehicle–road systems has painted a promising vision for the future of transportation. Road infrastructure, which serves directly to facilitate vehicle movement, has encountered novel challenges in tandem with the automotive industry’s reform and innovation. Thus, transformations in transportation modes and road infrastructure are underway. The construction of the next generation of road infrastructure, namely SRI, has garnered significant global attention. This chapter aims to encapsulate the developmental context and framework of road infrastructure in light of current technological advancements and to explore the trends and future directions of SRI.

Chapter 4. Connotation of SRI
Abstract
Road infrastructure is an important component of the urban transportation system, which has a significant effect on the development of cities. Therefore, the development of smart urban road infrastructures should be guided by the future development directions of urban transportation and cities. It is evident that SRI will play an increasingly important role in the construction of smart transportation systems and smart cities. Meanwhile, the continuous development of new technologies and concepts, such as connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, MaaS, smart monitoring systems, functional pavements, etc., brings opportunities and challenges to the development of SRI. An increasing number of practices are being carried out around the world to investigate and fulfill SRI's connotation. However, SRI has not yet been clearly defined. With this understanding, this chapter focuses on urban road infrastructure as the primary research subject, discusses the basic elements that SRI should encompass, and expounds on the connotation and architecture of SRI.

Chapter 5. Architecture of SRI
Abstract
Based on the foundational elements of SRI, its design and construction can be approached from five distinct perspectives: physical components, information flow systems, energy supply mechanisms, spatial utilization (or location) strategies, and R2X service systems.
Xingyi Zhu
Chapter 6. Implementation Path of SRI
Abstract
As the proverb says, “Rome was not built in a day.” Similarly, the construction of SRI should be executed progressively. Analogous to the level classification of autonomous vehicles, we endeavor to categorize SRI into various levels from diverse perspectives, informed by an understanding of its fundamental connotation and architecture. This stratification will, to a degree, steer and facilitate the progression of SRI.

Chapter 7. Classification of Current Technologies
Abstract
Following the previously outlined definition of SRI, existing technologies are categorized into five groups based on their intelligent capabilities: active perception, automatic analysis, active adaptation, dynamic interaction, and energy supply.

Chapter 8. Typical Applications of Emerging Technologies
Abstract
Travel is an activity that urban residents encounter daily. The quality of travel significantly influences people’s happiness. Wisdom in urban planning and infrastructure should not merely serve as an attractive “gimmick” but as a practical “means” to enhance the travel happiness of residents. This chapter delves into enhancing the residents’ travel experience, adopting a “service-oriented, intelligent experience” as the focal point. It aims for “speedy yet comfortable travel” and focuses on four scenarios: intelligent intersections, intelligent public transport, intelligent slow traffic, and intelligent construction. Through in-depth analysis of intelligent improvement measures, the objective is to facilitate “efficient and enjoyable travel.”

Chapter 9. Smart Daily Travel Demonstration Zone: A Case Study
Abstract
In accordance with the general requirements outlined in Chap. 8, the area along the subway line in Qingpu New Town has been preliminarily considered. The construction area of this demonstration project extends from Songze Avenue in the north to Dianpu River in the south and from Qing’an Road in the west to Youdun Port in the east.
Xingyi Zhu
Chapter 10. Comprehensive Management and Control Demonstration Zone: A Case Study
Abstract
The area around the National Convention and Exhibition Center (NECC) is preliminarily considered, starting from Tianshan West Road in the north to the Shanghai-Chongqing Highway in the south, from Huaxu Road in the west to Qingpu District in the east as the construction area for this demonstration project.

Chapter 11. Future Perspective on SRI
Abstract
Municipal road infrastructure, as the backbone of traffic, plays a pivotal role in the urban transportation system and is crucial for a city’s survival and development. The smart construction of municipal road infrastructure not only caters to the future evolution of road traffic but also, more significantly, as a vital element of the urban transportation system, it directly influences the construction and growth of the city. Therefore, the smart development of municipal road infrastructure must align with the prospective direction of urban and traffic development.
