Abstract

This chapter explores the challenges and solutions related to the replacement of a hot gas exchanger in a copper smelter acid plant. The text delves into the dynamic composition of sulfur dioxide-rich gas from the smelter and its impact on the acid plant's temperature profile. It highlights the critical role of the hot gas exchanger in managing high temperatures and the issues caused by tube failures due to hot corrosion and thermal stress. The case study presents a two-pronged approach to increasing the lifespan of the replacement exchanger: reducing tube metal temperatures and mitigating the effects of very high temperatures. Key modifications include reducing the excess heat transfer area, increasing tube and tubesheet thicknesses, and improving gas distribution through CFD modeling.
