Abstract

The article delves into the intricate relationship between the majoritarian compromise rule and the principle of social acceptability in voting systems. It begins by introducing the plurality rule and its advantages, but also its key disadvantage: the potential lack of majority support for the winning alternative. The study then focuses on the majoritarian compromise rule, which aims to select an alternative that satisfies the largest majority of voters as well as possible. The authors characterize the conditions under which this rule selects socially acceptable alternatives, particularly when the number of alternatives is even or odd. They also explore the behavior of this rule under restricted domains such as single-peaked, single-caved, and single-crossing preferences. The paper concludes by highlighting the importance of these findings and suggesting future research directions in multi-winner elections.
