Abstract

This chapter examines the role of social entrepreneurship in disaster risk reduction, with a focus on India. It begins by defining social entrepreneurship and its evolution, highlighting the unique characteristics that set it apart from traditional entrepreneurship. The study identifies five key characteristics: social mandate, opportunity and innovation, interactions, sustainable and scalable economic model, and profit reinvestment. These characteristics are applied to case studies of social enterprises in India, such as RIKA India, SEEDS India, and Rapid Response, demonstrating their effectiveness in disaster management. The chapter also discusses the importance of social entrepreneurship in building local capacity and enhancing disaster risk reduction, and provides recommendations for future research and policy development.
