Abstract

The chapter 'Social Isolation, Digital Connection: COVID-19’s Impact on Twitter Ego Networks' delves into the profound changes in online social interactions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the ego network model, the study examines how lockdowns altered the structure and dynamics of Twitter users' social connections. Key findings include a significant increase in the size and complexity of ego networks immediately after lockdowns, with users gaining more alters and forming more circles. However, this growth was temporary, as networks reverted to pre-pandemic levels once restrictions were lifted. The analysis also reveals shifts in relationship intimacy and a redirection of social cognitive capacity towards offline interactions post-lockdown. This detailed exploration of Twitter ego networks during the pandemic offers valuable insights into the adaptability and resilience of online social structures under extreme conditions.
