Abstract

The chapter delves into the significant role of social media in Japan's 2024 general election, focusing on the use of polarizing messaging and the exploitation of media fragmentation by challenger parties such as the Democratic Party for the People (DPP), Conservative Party of Japan (Hoshutō; CPJ), and Sanseitō. It contrasts these strategies with the 'business as usual' approach of established parties, highlighting the challenges posed by misinformation and declining trust in traditional media. The chapter also explores the impact of social media on other key electoral contests in 2024, including the Tokyo and Hyogo gubernatorial elections and the Tokyo-15 by-election. It discusses the potential consequences of an emerging 'information cleavage' between citizens who trust traditional news sources and those who rely on social media. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for mainstream political actors to adapt to the rapidly changing information ecosystem and the challenges of regulating social media to combat misinformation without igniting further mistrust.
