The social function of retailing was gradually lost during the 20
th
century as more emphasis was placed on using technology and streamlining distribution channels to reduce cost and improve operating efficiency. The store has become more of a functional place in offering goods and services and less of a place for people to socialize or interact. This paper represents the first step in understanding the social function of retailing and how retailers, especially brick-and-mortar retailers, can create a socially pleasant environment to improve store image and thus attract more customers.
