Abstract

This chapter delves into the analysis of laterally loaded rigid piles, highlighting the limitations of the conventional p-y method, particularly for large diameter short piles. It introduces a continuum-based analytical model that accurately captures the three-dimensional pile-soil interaction, eliminating the need for artificial adjustments of the soil modulus. The study presents a systematic parametric analysis of the factors influencing soil spring constants, including pile dimensions, soil layering, and soil properties. It concludes with the development of fitted algebraic equations for quick assessment of rigid pile response under lateral loads and moments, validated against 3D finite element analysis and field tests. These equations are derived through optimization using a genetic algorithm, providing practical tools for engineers to assess lateral displacement of rigid piles efficiently.
