Solar Thermal Energy: History

Author : Soteris A. Kalogirou

Published in: Solar Thermal Energy

Publisher: Springer US

Excerpt

Sun
The only star of our solar system providing the input power to all types of renewable energy systems.
Renewable Energy Systems
Systems using as input natural phenomena, like solar radiation, wind, seawater waves, currents and tides, biomass, and geothermal which are inexhaustible and friendly to the environment.
Concentrating systems
These are systems which use mirrors to concentrate the solar radiation onto a small receiver which can get very high temperature. These are usually used for power generation with the conventional Rankine thermodynamic cycle.
Solar dryers
These are systems which use solar radiation to dry food for conservation purposes. For centuries, before the use of refrigeration, this was the only way to conserve food.
Desalination
This is the method to remove salt and other minerals from the seawater to produce drinkable fresh water.
