Environmental education
Process in which individuals gain awareness of their environment and acquire knowledge, skills, values, and experiences to solve present and future environmental problems, including solid waste minimization.
Municipal solid waste
A waste type that includes predominantly household and commercial wastes collected by a municipality within a given area. They are in either solid or semisolid form and generally exclude industrial hazardous wastes.
Public involvement
The full range of activities utilized by an organization to engage the public in the decision-making process.
Recycling
The act of processing used or abandoned materials for use in creating new products.
Source reduction
Refers to any change in the design, manufacture, purchase, or use of materials or products (including packaging) to reduce their amount or toxicity before they become municipal solid waste.
