Abstract

The rapid advancement of quantum computing has raised significant security concerns in cryptography, prompting the development of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to counteract potential quantum attacks on symmetric ciphers. This article focuses on constructing efficient quantum circuit implementations of the Camellia block cipher, a cryptographic algorithm that adopts a Feistel–SPN structure. The authors propose both memory-efficient and depth-efficient quantum circuits for Camellia, leveraging tower field techniques and in-place implementations to optimize resource usage. The memory-efficient circuits aim to minimize the number of qubits required, while the depth-efficient circuits focus on reducing the T-depth, which is a critical metric for quantum computational time. The article also introduces new techniques for implementing the substitution layer (S-box) of Camellia, demonstrating how these optimizations can lead to significant improvements in the efficiency of quantum circuits for cryptographic algorithms.
