Abstract

The chapter delves into the challenges posed by Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed DoS (DDoS) attacks in SIP-based VoIP systems. It begins by highlighting the vulnerabilities of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the impact of these attacks on voice communication services. The authors propose a defense system that utilizes three innovative statistical algorithms—m-SGP, q-SGP, and h-SGP—to detect and prevent such attacks. These algorithms are designed to analyze the behavior and patterns of random attacks by considering multiple fields in INVITE messages. The chapter also describes the architecture of the defense system, including the use of an application firewall and an Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS). The experimental setup and results are detailed, showcasing the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in mitigating DoS and DDoS attacks. The findings indicate that the q-SGP and h-SGP models perform exceptionally well, particularly at higher attack rates, making the chapter a valuable resource for professionals seeking advanced solutions to protect VoIP systems from malicious attacks.
