The seamless integration of novel materials into semiconductor manufacturing process has spurred the development of sophisticated modeling tools capable of supporting the experimental activity and of shedding light on the behavior of the resulting devices. A fundamental aspect of device functionality lies in the transport of charged carriers. Accurately describing this transport requires to go beyond classical simulation approaches such as the drift–diffusion equations and to adopt state-of-the-art techniques based on quantum physics including tunnelling, confinement, and band-structure effects as well as carrier interactions with phonons, photons, surfaces, grain boundaries, or impurities to help design next-generation nanoscale devices. …
