Speed Analysis on Hill Roads in Mixed Traffic Conditions

This chapter explores the critical factors influencing vehicle speeds on hill roads in mixed traffic conditions, addressing the unique challenges posed by steep gradients, sharp curves, and narrow lanes. The study employs a comprehensive methodology, including videography data collection and multiple linear regression analysis, to investigate how variables such as gradient, vehicle volume, pedestrian and animal obstructions, and lateral clearance affect operating speeds. The research reveals that the upper speed limit on hill roads is significantly higher than the conservative estimates provided by the National Highways Authority of India, suggesting a need for revised speed limits to mitigate traffic congestion. The chapter also highlights the importance of considering multiple interacting factors in determining vehicle speed, providing valuable insights for the design and evaluation of highways in hilly terrains. Through a detailed literature review and robust data analysis, the study offers a foundation for evidence-based decision-making in road design and traffic control, contributing to safer and more efficient transportation systems.
