Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of spool valve stability and sealing land deformation, particularly focusing on the destabilizing effects of pressure-induced elastic deformations. It begins by examining historical cases of valve problems due to unfavorable sealing gap pressure fields, such as those encountered in common rail diesel injectors. The authors then present a rigorous nondimensional analysis to understand the main effects and influences of major system parameters on spool valve stability. The study introduces a simplified axisymmetric model and a Finite Element model to analyze elastic deformations and their impact on lateral spool valve stability. Notably, the chapter discusses innovative design modifications, like chamfering the sealing land, to enhance the self-centering capability of the valve. The comprehensive analysis, including both theoretical and practical aspects, offers valuable insights for professionals aiming to optimize spool valve performance and stability.
