Abstract

The chapter begins by discussing the inherent durability of concrete and the need for reinforcement due to its low tensile strength and brittleness. It introduces fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) as a solution, highlighting the various types of fibers used and their physical properties. The literature review section provides a historical context, starting with early experiments in Poland and Switzerland, and progresses to more recent studies in South Korea. These studies demonstrate the positive impact of different fiber types on the strength, deformability, and durability of spun concrete. The chapter then presents preliminary research results from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, focusing on the addition of steel fibers to spun concrete used in power poles. The experiments reveal that while the amount of steel fibers did not affect the modulus of elasticity, the compaction technology significantly improved it. The chapter concludes by outlining future research directions, including the use of increased amounts of steel fibers and different fiber geometries, aiming to optimize the manufacturing processes and enhance the strength and deformability of spun fiber concrete. The detailed experimental data and comparative analyses make this chapter a crucial read for anyone interested in advancing the field of spun concrete technology.
