Over the past three decades, the introduction of direct fuel injection and turbocharging has resulted in a five-fold increase in the power density of passenger car diesel engines. Owing in particular to new turbocharging concepts, this trend is set to continue in the future, meaning that the dynamic load on the con-rod bearings in diesel engines will increase. An innovative sputter bearing from Kolbenschmidt, based on a direct sputter coating, meets the requirements of the latest engine designs. …
