Abstract

The chapter delves into the stability analysis of embankments constructed on soft consolidating layered foundation soil. It introduces the finite element method for determining realistic stresses and the genetic algorithm for finding the critical slip surface and safety factor. The study emphasizes the importance of consolidation in embankment stability and demonstrates the effectiveness of the combined approach in predicting safety factors over different time intervals. The methodology involves using finite element analysis to model nonlinear soil behavior and staged construction, followed by the application of genetic algorithms to optimize the safety factor. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the application of the proposed method, showcasing how the safety factor evolves over time as the foundation soil consolidates. The chapter concludes by highlighting the practical implications of the method for ensuring the safety of embankments during and after the consolidation process.
