Abstract

This article delves into the intricate dynamics of gratitude expressions, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It examines how interpersonal and intrapersonal gratitude manifest and evolve, providing a detailed analysis of how these expressions relate to the fulfillment of human needs. The study draws on Maslow's Theory of Motivation to categorize gratitude expressions into deficiency and growth needs, offering a holistic view of human needs across multiple levels. By analyzing data from a gratitude journaling website, the research reveals significant shifts in gratitude expressions during the pandemic, highlighting the enduring importance of social connections and the potential for personal growth amidst adversity. The article also explores the stability and change in gratitude expressions over a five-year period, including both pre-pandemic and pandemic data. This longitudinal perspective provides unique insights into how individuals adapt their expressions of gratitude over time, offering a nuanced understanding of the psychological impacts of global events on personal well-being. The study's innovative use of repeated measures data to examine constancy and flexibility in gratitude expressions sets it apart from previous research, making it a valuable contribution to the field of positive psychology.
