Abstract

As the world is dealing with irreparable damage to the environment and depleting finite resources, designers must nurture their practice rigorously through the concept of sustainability in comparison to the past for a brighter future. United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014) endorses that education will play a pivotal role in percolating the idea of sustainability in future generations through a pedagogic shift toward exploring pro-sustainability choices which will transform the mindsets and lifestyles through collective discourse. Researchers have addressed that the knowledge of sustainable design shall be integral to design education from the very beginning, during the undergraduate level, as a core content for a holistic understanding. As per All India Survey on Higher Education, in the last 10 years, the number of students admitted in the B Des Course has increased by 92.5% and in B Arch by 79.5%, thus indicating a huge rise in design professionals. This paper aims at understanding the current state of sustainable design content in different B Des and B Arch courses across India in terms of academics. The study was done through an online survey with the students, faculties, and professionals associated with B Des or B Arch courses. Also, the syllabi of B Des and B Arch courses were examined. All the data obtained are collated, and inferences are drawn regarding the state of sustainable design content in design education at the bachelor’s degree level in India.
