State-of-the-Art Emergency Information Management and Communication at the Chemical Transportation Emergency Center

The Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC) has recently implemented state-of-the-art digital-optic technology to manage its vastly expanded chemical information base. The new information system can store millions of pages of information and still retrieve any single record within seconds. The information is stored in the CCITT group 3 fascimile standard, opening the door for providing information in a hard-copy format as well as verbally. Combined with interpreter service from the United States Agency for International Development, CHEMTREC hopes to greatly enhance its ability to assist in regions outside of North America.
