Abstract

Here, we introduce state variables, which were the hot topics in the middle of 1960s. Later, they have seeped into and made deep impact on signals and systems, circuit theory, controls, etc. You better get familiar with them and make friends with them as early as possible.

Footnotes
1
Note that the symbol u(t) is usually reserved for the unit step function. We have used u(t) to denote the excitation function for conformity with the control literature. We shall use the symbol μ(t) for the unit step function when the occasion arises.

2
A cut-set is a set of branches, which, when removed, splits the network into two unconnected parts.

3
The symbol y (k) stands for the kth derivative of y with respect to t.
