Volkswagen is unveiling the completely redesigned Passat, which will only be launched as a Variant in 2024. It is presented to the public at the IAA Mobility show in Munich.
VW Passat Variant
Volkswagen
The new VW Passat Variant is based on the latest generation of the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB evo) and is 4,917 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,506 mm high. The wheelbase increases by 50 to 2,841 mm. The more rounded design is a cautious further development and currently features typical VW elements such as the light strips at the front and rear. The CD value of 0.25 is said to be a best value at Volkswagen. LED headlights are standard, matrix headlights optional.
A 10.2" configurable driver's screen sits in the cockpit. A head-up display is also available at extra cost. The selector lever for the automatic moves behind the steering wheel, which has physical buttons, into a steering column lever, as in the ID models. The 12.9- to 15-inch infotainment touchscreen is freestanding on top of the center console. The interior software is based on the fourth-generation Modular Infotainment System. Trunk volume ranges from 690 to 1,920 liters. The ergoActive massage seats with heated and ventilated seats familiar from the Touareg are available as an option.
New eHybrid Models for the VW Passat
In terms of powertrains, customers can choose between three new plug-in and mild hybrid powertrains and five gasoline and diesel engines. The plug-in hybrid drives with 1.5 TSI evo engine offer a system output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp). Gearshifts are with the 6-speed eDSG. The new 19.7 kWh battery enables a battery-electric range of up to 100 km in the eHybrid models. The battery can now be charged at 11 kW instead of the previous 3.6 kW, as well as at DC fast charging stations at up to 50 kW. With the 45-liter tank, the total range is expected to be around 1,000 km.
The 1.5 eTSI with 48V mild hybrid drive offers an output of 110 kW (150 hp) and cylinder deactivation. The two versions with 2.0 TSI gasoline engines produce 150 kW (204 hp) and 195 kW (265 hp), the latter with 4Motion all-wheel drive. The 2.0 TDI turbodiesel engines offer 90 kW (122 hp), 110 kW (150 hp) and 142 kW (193 hp, with 4Motion all-wheel drive) output. Power transmission for the combustion engine versions is always handled by the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The "DCC Pro" adaptive chassis control system, which works together with a driving dynamics manager, is available as an option.
