Abstract

The article delves into the critical issue of river levee failures, particularly those caused by natural levees. It begins by discussing the devastating impact of Typhoon Hagibis in Japan and the major causes of levee breaches. The study then shifts to a detailed analysis of natural levees, their geological characteristics, and hydraulic conductivity. Using the Kinu River as a case study, the authors perform statistical studies and parametric simulations to evaluate the relationship between natural levees and piping failures. The findings reveal that certain geometric parameters, such as the relative elevation of the embankment and the thickness of seepage paths, significantly influence piping risk. The study also distinguishes between the effects of flooding and rainfall on leakage events, suggesting different failure mechanisms and potential countermeasures. Overall, the article offers valuable insights into managing river levees and highlights the need for more accurate evaluations and targeted countermeasures.
