Abstract

The chapter 'Stay on Topic, Please: Aligning User Comments to the Content of a News Article' delves into the critical issue of user comments' relevance to news articles. It introduces the Article-Comment Alignment Problem (ACAP), aiming to automatically identify pertinent comments. The study highlights the challenges posed by the informal and colloquial nature of comments and proposes methodologies, including BERTAC and BA-BC models, to address these challenges. The authors also develop a novel ordinal classification loss to enhance model performance. Empirical studies on data from five major news outlets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, making this chapter a valuable resource for understanding and managing online discussions in the news domain.
