Abstract

The chapter presents a thorough investigation into the failure of an ASTM A210 Grade A1 waterwall tube in a 615 MW subcritical boiler, highlighting the significant financial implications of such failures in power plants. The analysis reveals that steam erosion, caused by high-velocity steam impingement, is the primary failure mechanism, leading to material thinning and eventual tube rupture. Detailed laboratory examinations, including macrography, chemical composition analysis, microstructural analysis, hardness testing, and fractography, provide a comprehensive understanding of the failure process. The study underscores the importance of routine maintenance, such as visual inspections and thickness measurements, to detect early signs of erosion and prevent catastrophic failures. The findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms of steam erosion and the critical role of preventive maintenance in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of power plant operations.
