Abstract

The chapter discusses the evolution of fabrication methods for Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) over the past four decades, focusing on the microstructure and desirable properties achieved through these processes. It highlights the use of reaction synthesis for composites with fine reinforcement and explores the linear relationship between pressure and freezing time in liquid state processing. The chapter presents the preparation of Al-7%Al2O3 composites using stir casting and analyzes their mechanical properties, demonstrating significant improvements in ultimate tensile stress and proof stress. It also delves into the prediction of elastic properties using rule of mixtures models and validates these predictions experimentally. The strengthening mechanisms of discontinuously reinforced composites are explored, including Orowan strengthening and the effects of dislocation density. The chapter concludes with a validation of theoretical models and suggestions for further research, making it a valuable resource for professionals in the field.
