Abstract

This article delves into the intricate dynamics of discrete-time quantum walks (QWs) on a one-dimensional integer lattice, particularly focusing on two-state space-inhomogeneous QWs. It examines the property of localization, where the probability of finding a particle near its initial position remains positive over time, and introduces the concept of strong trapping, which occurs when this property is observed for any initial state starting from the origin. The study provides a detailed mathematical analysis, including the derivation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the time evolution operator, and introduces a transfer matrix method to simplify the analysis. The authors present analytical results for five specific models, demonstrating the conditions under which strong trapping occurs and providing insights into the time-averaged limit distributions. The findings have significant implications for the manipulation of particles in quantum systems and could serve as a foundational theory for future research in quantum walks.
