Abstract

This chapter delves into the concerns raised by structural engineering employers regarding the competencies of recent graduates. It highlights the over-reliance on computer software for analysis and design, which has led to a reduction in graduates' understanding of structural behavior. The text explores the desired attributes of graduate engineers, emphasizing the importance of core engineering principles, practical experience, and the ability to conceptualize designs. It also discusses the balance between technical and soft skills, with a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of engineering science. The chapter concludes with recommendations for stronger links between universities and industry to ensure a closer synergy between curricula and workplace expectations. Additionally, it suggests that the role of the university should be focused sharply on acquiring sound understanding of the underpinning science of engineering. The text also highlights the importance of 'soft skills' such as relational and communication competencies, which are of equal importance to technical competencies.
