Abstract

This chapter explores the structural impacts of truck platooning on prestressed concrete bridges, focusing on both ultimate and serviceability limit states. The study employs a reliability-based assessment approach, analyzing 33 bridge archetypes with varying span lengths and traffic lanes. Key findings include significant reductions in the reliability index for shorter headways, with the serviceability limit state showing sensitivity to a wider range of headways. The analysis reveals that while truck platooning may meet safety standards at the ultimate limit state, it could fail at the serviceability limit state, emphasizing the need for comprehensive evaluations. The study concludes by suggesting the implementation of headway restrictions to maintain structural integrity and functionality, providing valuable insights for adapting existing infrastructure and designing future bridges to accommodate truck platooning.
